  1. One of the most dermally permissive essential oils in aromatherapy. T&Y recommends 15% max dermal (vs IFRA's conservative 1.5%). That cap is driven solely by potential isoeugenol content (0–1.3%), not by any broader toxicity.
  2. Not phototoxic, no pregnancy or pediatric contraindication, no drug interactions listed. Safest profile of any major base note.
  3. Origin determines isoeugenol content — and therefore risk. Haiti / India / Réunion / El Salvador / Madagascar vetivers are isoeugenol-free (essentially unlimited dermal). Java / China / Brazil / Mexico vetivers contain isoeugenol and should respect the 15% T&Y cap. Practitioners who want the highest safety margin specify Haitian or Indian origin.
  4. Over 150 sesquiterpene compounds identified (Champagnat et al 2006). Chemistry is more complex than any other Ch.13 profile. Khusimol is the headline marker but not the olfactory driver on its own.
  5. Base note, earth-family, paired with [[patchouli]]. Both are deep base anchors; together they form the "grounding" backbone in anxiolytic blends, especially with frankincense.

Vetiver has the most complex chemistry in Ch.13 — Champagnat et al (2006) identified 150+ sesquiterpenoid compounds, many unique to this oil. Constituent ranges below reflect a composite from 9 production countries:

Origin subgroups (three distinct chemotypes, based on constituent profile):

  • Subgroup 1 (isoeugenol-free): Haiti, India, Réunion, El Salvador.
  • Subgroup 2 (isoeugenol-containing): Java, China, Brazil, Mexico.
  • Subgroup 3 (Madagascar): isoeugenol-free; distinct composition in khusimol / β-vetivenene / β-vetispirene ratios.

Toxicologically relevant constituents: isoeugenol (allergen / sensitizer, Ch.14). Isoeugenol is the sole reason the dermal max is set — if the specific batch is certified isoeugenol-free, the cap effectively lifts.

Quality / adulteration: Burfield (2003) reports vetiver is generally not heavily adulterated except with non-odorous diluents. Oyen & Dung (1999) note possible adulteration with cheap sesquiterpenes (caryophyllene derivatives, cyperus oil).
