Hemp essential oil (Cannabis sativa L., Cannabaceae flowering-tops steam distillate from low-THC industrial cultivars) is a β-myrcene + β-caryophyllene + α-pinene + (E)-β-ocimene + terpinolene monoterpene-hydrocarbon-dominant oil with a latent-oxidation hazard only Tisserand & Young profile — no toxicity in fresh oil but skin sensitization if oxidized due to combined (+)-limonene, α-pinene and δ-3-carene autoxidation potential. B216 Ch.13 p.613–614 cites two commercial chemotypes: French (Meier & Mediavilla 1998 + Sonnay 2011 — β-myrcene 31.1% + β-caryophyllene 13.7% + (E)-β-ocimene 10.2% + terpinolene 8.9% + α-pinene 7.6%) and Swiss (β-myrcene 21.2–31.1% + β-caryophyllene 14.3–19.4% + α-pinene 14.3–19.4% — different chemotype with higher α-pinene). Framework caps with α-pinene+δ-3-carene autoxidation caveat: adult dermal 5.0% + sensitive 3.0% + pregnancy 5.0% + pediatric cascade + max_oral 700 mg/day. Storage imperative: dark + airtight + refrigerator + antioxidant (T&Y verbatim p.614). Canadian Industrial Hemp Regulations cap: 10 µg/g THC in cosmetics (Health Canada 2011). Continues Mini-Batch 21a clean-or-latent trio (hemp + hibawood + hinoki-leaf — but hibawood has pregnancy contraindication, hemp + hinoki-leaf are clean-or-latent only). Forms β-myrcene-rich peer with grindelia EO736 (20b) at the highest end of the class — confirmed forward reference fulfilled.

antimicrobial (broad-spectrum bacterial)

Monoterpene hydrocarbons (β-myrcene 21–31%, α-pinene, (+)-limonene) and sesquiterpene constituents synergistically disrupt bacterial cell membranes and inhibit microbial respiratory enzymes across multiple industrial hemp EO varieties.

Ref: Nissen L et al. (2010) Fitoterapia 81:413–419

antifungal (mould inhibition)

Hemp EO terpene fractions demonstrated direct inhibition of food-spoilage and bread-mould fungal species in standardized in-vitro microbiological assays across multiple industrial hemp varieties.

Ref: Nissen L et al. (2010) Fitoterapia 81:413–419

anti-inflammatory (CB2 partial agonism)

β-Caryophyllene, a sesquiterpene constituent of hemp flowering-tops EO, binds CB2 receptors as a partial agonist and down-regulates NF-κB-mediated pro-inflammatory cytokine cascades.

Ref: Gertsch J et al. (2008) PNAS 105:9099–9104 — direct β-caryophyllene constituent data; sesquiterpene fraction confirmed present in hemp EO chemotype

analgesic support (CB2-peripheral)

CB2 partial agonism by β-caryophyllene modulates peripheral nociceptor signalling independently of central opioid pathways; most relevant via topical application over inflamed or sore tissue.

Ref: class-extrapolation from β-caryophyllene CB2 agonism; Gertsch J et al. (2008) PNAS 105:9099–9104

relaxant / mild sedative (aromatic)

β-Myrcene-dominant terpene profile (21–31%) is associated with CNS sedative and muscle-relaxant activity via GABA-A potentiation in rodent models; diffusion is the most applicable route.

Ref: Tisserand R, Young R (2014) Essential Oil Safety 2nd ed., Ch.13 p.613–614 — β-myrcene class sedative properties

AI-summary

No RCT-grade human clinical evidence for whole hemp essential oil as a therapeutic agent. The strongest controlled data is Nissen et al. (2010, Fitoterapia 81:413–419) — standardized in-vitro antimicrobial assays across multiple industrial hemp EO varieties documenting inhibition of bacterial and mould species. Constituent-level mechanistic evidence: Gertsch et al. (2008, PNAS 105:9099–9104) demonstrated β-caryophyllene as a CB2 receptor partial agonist in receptor-binding and cell-culture assays; this sesquiterpene is present in hemp EO's minor fraction. Composition studies (Meier & Mediavilla 1998; Sonnay 2011; Mediavilla & Steinmann 1997) provide reliable chemistry anchoring without therapeutic endpoints. β-Myrcene toxicology (Delgado 1993a/b; NTP 2010a) is safety-oriented only. Traditional aromatherapy use; no RCT-grade human clinical evidence located.

Phương phápLiều lượngGhi chú
Diffusion4–6 drops per 100 ml water in ultrasonic diffuserSessions 20–30 min; ventilate room between uses. Use only fresh oil with antioxidant added per IFRA 2009; refrigerated storage mandatory.
Topical massage1–2% in carrier oil (2–4 drops per 10 ml)Max 5% T&Y framework. Use oxidation-stable carrier (jojoba, fractionated coconut). Only fresh oil — oxidised peroxides are sensitisers (Sköld 2008; IFRA 2009).
Skincare blend0.5–1% in facial formulationAdd 0.1% BHT or α-tocopherol per IFRA 2009. THC ≤10 µg/g in finished product required for cosmetic compliance (Health Canada 2011).
Direct inhalation1–2 drops on tissue or inhaler wickBrief 2–3 inhalation sessions for acute relaxation. THC is non-volatile; steam-distilled hemp EO carries no psychoactive cannabinoids.

Dầu nền phù hợp

JojobaLiquid-wax structure with no polyunsaturated autoxidation pathways; ideal pairing for a high-latent-oxidation-risk EO with β-myrcene and α-pinene peroxide-prone fractions.
Hemp seed oilThematic pairing; omega-6/omega-3 and γ-linolenic acid profile provides complementary anti-inflammatory fatty acid support for the EO's CB2-mediated action.
Fractionated coconut oilSaturated medium-chain triglycerides resist rancidity, protecting the EO's oxidation-prone terpene profile; lightweight and non-comedogenic for topical use.
Argan oilHigh endogenous tocopherol content acts as natural antioxidant, mitigating β-myrcene and α-pinene latent-oxidation risk during blended product shelf life.

§3 Chemical Profile — chemotype, constituent ranges, adulteration

Per Meier & Mediavilla 1998 + Sonnay 2011 private communication (cited in B216 Ch.13 p.613–614):

French chemotype:

Constituent%Role

β-Caryophyllene13.7%Secondary sesquiterpene (CB2 cannabinoid-receptor partial agonist — anti-inflammatory)
(E)-β-Ocimene10.2%Acyclic monoterpene
Terpinolene8.9%Cyclic monoterpene (autoxidation-prone)
α-Pinene7.6%Bicyclic monoterpene (autoxidation-prone peroxide class)
α-Caryophyllene (humulene)4.5%Sesquiterpene
β-Pinene3.0%Bicyclic monoterpene
β-Caryophyllene oxide2.2%Sesquiterpene oxide (oxidation marker)

(E)-α-Bergamotene1.3%Sesquiterpene
(Z)-β-Ocimene1.1%Acyclic monoterpene
(+)-Limonene1.0%Cyclic monoterpene (autoxidation-prone)

Swiss chemotype:

Constituent%Note
β-Myrcene21.2–31.1%Dominant — overlaps with French upper bound
β-Caryophyllene14.3–19.4%Secondary — higher than French
α-Pinene14.3–19.4%Substantially higher than French (7.6%) — distinguishing chemotype marker
(E)-β-Ocimene2.1–6.7%Lower than French (10.2%)
α-Caryophyllene5.0–7.4%Higher than French
β-Pinene6.0–7.2%Higher than French
β-Caryophyllene oxide2.0–5.8%Higher oxidation marker (older/aged samples?)
Terpinolene1.6–9.1%Variable
(+)-Limonene3.7–4.4%Higher than French
β-Phellandrenetr–1.5%Swiss-only marker

Dominant-pair rail: Both chemotypes share β-myrcene + β-caryophyllene as #1 + #2 dominants (combined 35–50% of oil). French distinguished by higher (E)-β-ocimene + lower α-pinene; Swiss by higher α-pinene + presence of β-phellandrene.

β-Myrcene-rich-class rail (peer cross-link, fulfilled forward reference from grindelia EO736):

  • Hop oil (Cannabaceae same family, 30–50% β-myrcene — highest in class)
  • Hemp (this oil, 21–31% — second-highest)
  • Verbena-exotic (Poaceae, 15–23%)
  • [[grindelia]] (EO736, 20b — Asteraceae, 14–26%)
  • [[lemongrass]] (Poaceae, 1–2%)

β-Caryophyllene-rich-class rail: 13.7–19.4% β-caryophyllene shared with [[copaiba]] (EO710, 16c — 53% — highest in class), [[clove-bud]], [[ylang-ylang-complete]] (EO680, 14a), [[black-pepper]] minor levels. CB2 partial agonist class (Gertsch 2008) — non-psychoactive cannabinoid-receptor activity; hemp's "entourage effect" partially driven by β-caryophyllene.

α-Pinene-autoxidation-class rail: Swiss chemotype 14.3–19.4% α-pinene peer with Pinaceae conifers (fir-needle EO721–725, fir-douglas EO719, juniper-berry, pine-scots, spruce-black/white) + cypress-mediterranean + grindelia EO736 (17–24%). IFRA 2009 antioxidant mandate applies.

δ-3-Carene-class rail: T&Y p.614 explicit mentions "combined (+)-limonene, α-pinene and δ-3-carene content" as autoxidation-storage-driver — δ-3-carene below GC quantification threshold (<1%) in cited French/Swiss analyses but T&Y notes its presence as autoxidation contributor. δ-3-carene autoxidation hazard documented in Pinaceae turpentine-class oils.

Cannabaceae-glandular-trichome-anatomy rail: EO biosynthesis localized in inflorescence glandular hairs (Malingré 1975), same site as cannabinoid biosynthesis. Co-distillation of trace cannabinoids inevitable; Canadian regulatory cap 10 µg/g THC reflects this.

§10 Therapeutic Uses — skin, emotional, physical, respiratory

Hemp EO has limited traditional aromatherapy heritage (most "cannabis healing" tradition references the herb / flower / cannabinoid extract, NOT the EO — see EO-vs-cannabinoid-extract rail). Modern aromatherapy uses:

  • Anti-inflammatory + analgesic blending — β-caryophyllene CB2 partial agonist activity (Gertsch 2008) anecdotally extends to topical anti-inflammatory; "entourage effect" hypothesis with cannabinoid extracts
  • Respiratory — green-piney inhaler accord for stress-related shallow breathing
  • Emotional — anecdotal "grounding + calming" properties (volatile β-myrcene is the cannabis cultivar marker associated with sedating "indica" effect; not robustly clinically validated)
  • Massage blending — peppery-herbal facet pairs with [[copaiba]] (EO710), [[black-pepper]], [[ginger-jamaica]], [[lavender-true]] for muscle preparations
  • Perfumery — niche "cannabis accord" ingredient for green-skunky character; pairs with [[grindelia]] (EO736), hop-extract, [[fir-needle-canadian]] (EO721), [[juniper-berry]]

Note on plant vs EO (EO-vs-cannabinoid-extract rail): Whole cannabis flower / cannabis CO2 extract / cannabis tincture / cannabidiol (CBD) isolate / THC (medical or recreational) all contain the cannabinoid fraction (THC + CBD + CBG + CBN + 100+ minor cannabinoids), which is the non-volatile resin fraction that does NOT distill over into the EO at commercial scale. CBD's documented anti-anxiety + anti-inflammatory + anti-epileptic pharmacology (FDA-approved Epidiolex 2018 for Lennox-Gastaut + Dravet syndromes) is NOT present in hemp EO. Do NOT extrapolate cannabinoid pharmacology to hemp EO. Same disambiguation pattern as:

  • [[grindelia]] (EO736, 20b) Grindeliae herba labdane diterpenic acids
  • [[goldenrod]] (EO735, 20a) Solidaginis herba urinary flavonoids
  • [[feverfew]] (EO717) parthenolide
  • [[boldo]] (EO692) boldine alkaloid

Hemp EO = aromatherapy specialty volatile commodity with terpene-only pharmacology; cannabis cannabinoid extract = entirely separate medical/regulatory category.

§11 Energetics — TCM, Ayurveda, aromatic energetics
  • TCM affinity: Liver + Lung channels (calming + green-respiratory tradition)
  • Five-element: Mộc (Wood) primary via green-herbaceous + Liver-channel + sesquiterpene-cushion grounding · Kim (Metal) secondary via lung/respiratory · Thuỷ (Water) tertiary via β-caryophyllene calming
  • Ayurvedic dosha: Vata-balancing (grounding sesquiterpene cushion), Pitta-neutral, Kapha-stimulating slightly (β-myrcene mobilizing)
  • Planetary: Saturn (cannabis cultural/ritual heritage, structure-altering perception in herb form) / Moon (calming sedative β-myrcene cultivar association)
