- EO hazards: None known. Contraindications: None known. GRAS. Opdyke 1974 French 8%/25 volunteers non-irritating non-sensitizing; Opdyke & Letizia 1982 Russian 8%/25 × 2 panels non-irritating non-sensitizing non-phototoxic; Rudzki 1976 dermatitis patch test 2%/200 → 1 (0.5%) reaction.
- Absolute hazards: Skin sensitization (MODERATE risk) — dermal cap 0.25% per Bouhlal 1988b (2%, 8%, 10% tested on 25 fragrance-sensitive volunteers → 5/7/7 reactions respectively; 0.25% = highest-no-reaction). Two different cap regimes — MUST disambiguate in §14.
- Not pregnancy-contraindicated (despite widespread "estrogen-like" folk claim attributed to Franchomme & Pénöel 1990). T&Y: sclareol has NO estrogen-like activity per Topçu & Gören 2007; 13-epi-sclareol anti-estrogen in vitro (Sashidhara 2007); typical EO contains only 0.1–0.4% sclareol. Framework-cautious pregnancy dilution applies but no T&Y CI.
- Not phototoxic. Foray 1999 French EO shows strong in vitro anticancer activity against HL60 + K562 + MCF7 + A2780 cell lines (comparable to doxorubicin). Zani 1991: EO not mutagenic (Bacillus subtilis rec-assay + Ames). Adulteration common (Kubeczka 2002: natural/synthetic linalool + linalyl acetate mixtures).
