Tóm Tắt Khoa Học

Từ Thư Viện Kinh Điển
  1. Angelica glauca Edgew., Apiaceae. Source: root; steam distillation. "Himalayan Angelica / Chora / Gandrayan / Smooth Angelica / Bạch chỉ Himalaya". COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CHEMISTRY from [[angelica-root]] (European A. archangelica) — this is a phthalide-dominant CNS-active oil, NOT a furanocoumarin-phototoxic oil. Indian traditional herbal medicine heritage (Garhwal + Kumaon Himalayan regions).
  2. Chemistry (Mathela 1988; Kapahi 1991 — via B216): (Z)-3-Butylidene phthalide 11.3–20.5% + (Z)-Ligustilide 8.2–17.4% + β-Phellandrene 5.1–14.2% + α-Pinene 4.3–11.8% + (Z)-3-Butylidene-4,5-dihydrophthalide 3.1–9.5% + Myrcene 2.0–7.1% + Sabinene 1.2–5.8% + p-Cymene 0.8–4.2% + δ-3-Carene 0.5–3.5% + Senkyunolide 0.4–2.8%. Phthalide-dominant (combined phthalides ≈25–50%).
  3. Hazards: CNS depression at high doses; theoretical drug interactions (CNS-sedative synergy); possible emmenagogue (folk). Contraindications: Pregnancy (all trimesters, all routes — folk + phthalide); children <6y. Max dermal: No T&Y numeric cap — framework 2–3% (phthalide CNS signal). Max oral: Framework ~30 mg/day conservative.
  4. Phthalide-CNS-active rail (CRITICAL — distinct from A. archangelica): Butylidene phthalide + ligustilide are CNS-active sedative-anxiolytic phthalide lactones — same chemistry family as Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai — ligustilide is the signature Dong Quai active) + Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong). Mechanism: GABA-A modulation + calcium channel modulation + smooth muscle relaxation. Sedative-hypnotic additive with alcohol + benzodiazepines + opioids + other CNS depressants. Traditional use for anxiety, insomnia, dysmenorrhea — consistent with mechanism.
  5. Species-confusion with A. archangelica rail (CRITICAL): Both are called "Angelica root oil" commercially but they are radically different products — European archangelica is furanocoumarin-phototoxic + CYP3A4 inhibitor; Himalayan glauca is phthalide-CNS-sedative + possible emmenagogue. NEVER substitute one for the other. Furanocoumarin content in A. glauca is negligible; phthalide content in A. archangelica is negligible. If CoA shows phthalides dominant = glauca; if furanocoumarins dominant = archangelica; if BOTH shown, the oil is suspicious (possible blend / adulteration).

Pha Chế & Hòa Hợp

Anxiolytic / Nervine sedative

(Z)-ligustilide and related phthalides modulate GABAergic and serotonergic pathways, producing calming and mild sedative effects consistent with the Angelica phthalide class.

Ref: Pang et al. (ligustilide pharmacology, class-extrapolation from A. sinensis research line); B216 Ch.14 phthalide profile composite

Antispasmodic

Phthalide constituents including butylidenephthalide and (Z)-ligustilide relax smooth muscle via calcium-channel antagonism, reducing visceral and musculoskeletal spasm.

Ref: B216 Ch.14 phthalide profile (celery + lovage + angelica glauca + chuan xiong composite)

Carminative / Digestive tonic

Traditional Ayurvedic application of Chora/Gandrali root for flatulence, gastric discomfort, and digestive atony is supported by the antispasmodic phthalide chemistry of the root EO.

Ref: Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, Chora/Gandrali monograph; Tisserand & Young 2014, Ch.13 p.441

Emmenagogue / Uterotonic — HAZARD (basis for pregnancy CI)

(Z)-ligustilide exerts uterotonic activity via oxytocin-receptor sensitisation in uterine smooth muscle, constituting the pharmacological basis for the absolute pregnancy contraindication.

Ref: Pang et al. (ligustilide uterotonic mechanism, A. sinensis research line); Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (classical pregnancy CI for Chora)

Analgesic / Anti-inflammatory

Phthalide constituents attenuate pro-inflammatory mediators and modulate nociceptive signalling pathways; evidence extrapolated from celery seed and lovage root phthalide class peers.

Ref: class-extrapolation from lovage-root and celery-seed EO peers; B216 Ch.14 phthalide profile composite

Grounding / Adaptogenic tonic (traditional)

Himalayan Ayurvedic tradition classifies Gandrayan root as a vata-balancing nervine tonic for fatigue and nervous exhaustion; no constituent-level mechanistic confirmation specific to A. glauca.

Ref: Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, Chora/Gandrali monograph

AI-summary

No RCT-grade clinical evidence is available specifically for Angelica glauca essential oil. GC composition is characterised by Mathela (1988) and Kapahi (1991), confirming the phthalide chemotype shared with the broader Angelica genus. The primary pharmacological evidence for the dominant phthalide constituent (Z)-ligustilide derives from the A. sinensis research line (Pang et al.), where anxiolytic, antispasmodic, and uterotonic actions have been demonstrated in vitro and in rodent models. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India documents classical Chora/Gandrali use for digestive, nervine, and analgesic indications with a traditional-use evidence grade. All therapeutic efficacy claims are traditional-use or class-extrapolation grade (rating ≤ 3); no controlled human studies on A. glauca EO were located in available citations.

Dầu nền phù hợp

JojobaWax-ester stability extends shelf life of the phthalide-rich EO and provides a non-greasy, skin-compatible base well-suited to therapeutic massage concentrations.
Sweet almond oilLight texture and near-neutral scent preserve the earthy-balsamic aromatic character; oleic acid profile supports dermal absorption at the 1.5–2.5% working range.
Fractionated coconut oilHighly stable, odourless, and rapidly absorbed — preferred when a clean-finish formulation is needed without masking the EO's distinctive aromatic profile.

Chemistry insight:

  • Phthalide-dominant — butylidene phthalide + ligustilide + dihydrophthalide + senkyunolide combined ≈25–50%. This is the defining chemistry of A. glauca + A. sinensis + Ligusticum genus — a small but biologically potent family of C₁₂ aromatic lactones with known CNS + smooth-muscle activity.
  • Ligustilide 8–17% is the signature constituent shared with Dong Quai (A. sinensis). Ligustilide demonstrates documented anxiolytic + antispasmodic + neuroprotective activity in animal + cell-culture studies (TCM research). Susceptible to autoxidation → dimers (levistolide A, tokinolide B) which have distinct biological profiles.
  • Butylidene phthalide 11–21% — primary CNS-sedative + smooth-muscle relaxant phthalide. Mechanism includes GABA-A positive allosteric modulation + L-type calcium channel inhibition. Clinically relevant at oral doses; minimal dermal systemic exposure.
  • β-Phellandrene + α-pinene + monoterpene backbone 15–30% — standard Apiaceae monoterpene frame but lower % than A. archangelica (60-80%). Gives a lighter, less resinous character.
  • Furanocoumarins essentially ABSENT / trace — this is the key differentiator from A. archangelica. NOT phototoxic. NOT CYP3A4 mechanism-based inhibitor.
  • Quality / adulteration: Common adulterants: (1) A. sinensis root oil (Chinese Dong Quai — chemistry is very similar; GC differentiation requires careful stereochemistry + trace-marker analysis); (2) Ligusticum chuanxiong oil (Chuan Xiong — also phthalide-dominant, even closer chemistry); (3) synthetic butylidene phthalide + ligustilide blends; (4) dilution with odorless carrier. Authentication requires GC + known-marker fingerprint. Wild-harvested vs cultivated is a sustainability concern, not a chemistry concern.

§10 Therapeutic Uses — skin, emotional, physical, respiratory
  • Emotional / anxiolytic (inhalation + dermal): 1–2% dilution for anxiety, restlessness, insomnia. Supported by Ayurvedic + emerging research on ligustilide-class anxiolysis.
  • Digestive (oral, controlled dose): Ayurvedic Chora tradition for dyspepsia, flatulence, colic. Framework oral ≤30 mg/day.
  • Menstrual support (DERMAL ONLY for non-pregnant adult): 2% abdominal application for dysmenorrhea, irregular cycles. DO NOT USE during pregnancy.
  • Respiratory (inhalation): Traditional use for cough + bronchitis; secondary to digestive + nervous-system uses.
  • Perfumery: 0.1–0.5% for celery-lovage-musk accords.
Năng Lượng & Ngũ Hành
§11 Energetics — TCM, Ayurveda, aromatic energetics
  • Five-element: Thổ (Earth — digestive Spleen-Stomach) + Mộc (Wood — Liver-channel smooth-muscle + emmenagogue) + trace Thủy (Water — Kidney root-energy).
  • Ayurveda: Chora / Gandraliuṣṇa (hot, warming) + tīkṣṇa (penetrating) + pitta-vāta pacifying at controlled doses; contraindicated in pregnancy per classical texts.
  • Himalayan folk heritage: Garhwali + Kumaoni traditional medicine system; used as digestive tonic + respiratory support + menstrual regulator; also incense + ritual use.
